   Moving on to a new firm? Get off to a good start by preparing ahead for your first few months on the job.

  'In the interview process, you get a sense of what your job is, but it doesn't always play out exactly that way,' says Cathy Benko, chief talent officer at accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLC. Consider these tips to ensure a smooth transition:

-- Meet your peers in advance. Show you are eager to hit the ground running by getting together with the people you will be working with before your first day, advises Kimley Primavera, director of recruiting at Capital H Group, a human-resources consulting firm. Few professionals make this effort and those who do often make a highly favorable first impression, she says. What's more, you can quickly figure out the kind of behaviors or rules that aren't formally spelled out, says Ms. Primavera. You might discover that email is the preferred way to communicate or that everyone is expected to attend daily morning meetings, even though they are billed as optional.

-- Act humble. No matter how talented or experienced you may be, there is always a learning curve to overcome, says John LeBlanc, vice president of human resources and product management at Jefferson Wells International, a professional-services firm. 'Don't talk more than you listen,' he says. This can be tough if you were seen as an expert at your old firm. You don't want to seem like a know-it-all, he says.

-- Watch what you say. Avoid divulging any proprietary information about a prior employer, even if you aren't legally bound to stay mum, warns Peggy Klaus, an executive coach in Berkeley, Calif. Your colleagues may question your integrity if you do, she says.

-- Differentiate yourself. There are small ways you can stand out -- without coming across as a sycophant, says Mr. LeBlanc. Volunteer to take on an extra task. Or complete an assignment a day or so before it is due. 'All managers are looking for employees who have a bandwidth more than they expected,' Mr. LeBlanc says. Avoid going too far to impress your boss, adds Paul Hellman, president of Express Potential, a workplace-performance consulting firm based in Framingham, Mass. 'You don't have to demonstrate you're a superhero.'

-- Request feedback. In the first month, ask for your boss's opinion of how you're doing on a weekly basis, advises Mr. LeBlanc. Then scale back to once every two to three weeks. Find out what is expected of you in the weeks ahead, if it isn't clear. With some managers, 'you won't know unless you ask,' he says.

-- Build your network. Get to know, and continue to stay in touch with, professionals in support roles throughout the company, recommends Ms. Benko. You will boost your odds of quickly gaining their help when you need it, she explains. Likewise, seek out a mentor within the organization, suggests Ms. Primavera. If your employer doesn't have a formal program for matching workers with advisers, look for someone in a role you aspire to land within the next three to five years, she says.

-- Plan a post-90-day strategy. As you near the three-month mark, start setting long-term professional and job-related goals and share them with your boss, recommends Mr. LeBlanc. Get feedback from your boss to make sure you are on the same page.

出言谨慎。加利福尼亚州伯克利的职业咨询师佩吉•克劳斯(Peggy Klaus)就此告诫说,切勿泄露前雇主的专有信息,就算你没有保密义务也得注意。她解释道,如果你不注意这点,你的同事会怀疑你的人品。

适时表现。勒布朗说道,你总会找到既能表现自己,又不会显得拍马屁的小途径。你可以自愿接受额外的工作。你也可以提前一天左右完成交给你的工作。勒布朗说,经理们都希望找到工作能力超出他们预期的雇员。但总部位于马萨诸塞州弗雷明汉的工作业绩咨询公司Express Potential的总裁保罗•赫尔曼(Paul Hellman)告诫说,不要给上司留下急于表现的印象。他谈到,千万不要表现得像个超级英雄。

要求反馈。勒布朗在这方面建议道,跳槽的第一个月,你可以每周向上司询问对你表现的意见。随后可以每两到三周询问一次。要了解老板对你未来几周表现的期望。他谈到,对很多经理来说,你不问就不会得知他们的想法。

构建自己的人际网络。本科在这方面有她的建议:努力结识公司上下能给你提供支持的人士,并与其保持良好关系。她对此解释道,这样你在需要他们助你一臂之力时,才更有希望及时得到帮助。普里马韦拉也建议说,你可以在团体内找一个良师益友。如果你的雇主没有为员工配备指导者的正式机制,那你应该结识一位你希望自己未来3到5年能做到他当前职位的人。

制定90天之后的职场策略。勒布朗说,随着入职时间接近三个月关口,就要着手制定长期的职业与工作规划了,记得要给你的上司看。你应当咨询上司的意见,确保你们对此想法一致。
