Our knowledge of the oceans a hundred years ago was confined to the two-dimensional shape of the sea surface and the hazards of navigation presented by the irregularities in depth of the shallow water close to the land.

be confined to 局限于

two-dimensional adj. 二度空间的,二维的,平面的

= flat

=planer  a. 平面的,平坦的

hazard: 冒险,危险,危害

present    v. 呈现,提出; a. 现在的 n. 礼物,现在

irregularity 不规则

shallow water 浅水区

 

The open sea was deep and mysterious, and anyone who gave more than a passing thought to the bottom confines of the oceans probably assumed that the sea bed was flat.

open sea

复习:more than + v. n. : 不仅仅

passing thought一闪而过的念头

give a thought to sb./sth. 想象、思考

the bottom (which ) confines of the oceans

 

Sir James Clark Ross had obtained a sounding of over 2,400 fathoms in 1839, but it was not until 1869, when H. M. S. Porcupine was put at the disposal of the Royal Society for several cruises, that a series of deep soundings was obtained in the Atlantic and the first samples were collected by dredging the bottom.

Shortly after this the famous H. M. S. Challenger expedition established the study of the sea-floor as a subject worthy of the most qualified physicists and geologists.

worthy of = deserving 多用于表语,“值得……”,

worthy of + n 或being done.

This article is worthy of careful study.

This article is worthy of being carefully studied.

His deeds are worthy of praise.

His deeds are worth of being praised.

worthy + to be done

This article is worthy to be carefully studied.

There occurred nothing worthy to be mentioned. = there occurred nothing worthy of being mentioned.

worth: 介词,用于系动词be 后面,后面只能跟名词或动名词。
