注解：
1）How’s school going?注意此句中的school是不可数名词，作“学业”“功课”解。又如：She always found school difficult.
2）grant：助学金
3）graduate school研究生院
4）doctorate：博士学位
5）It is to me=It is an interesting field to me.他的朋友说，sounds like而他说it is,语气肯定。is要重读。
6）nuclear physics：核物理学。
7）Master’s degree:硕士学位。
8）prefer..to...：喜欢（前者）甚于后者。
9）ahead of you:在你的前面。

DIALOG 25
FREEZING COLD OUTSIDE

(Wind noises)
laurance--Brrrr!I’m cold.I thought it was supposed to get warmer today.
soony--Yeah,I thought so,too.That’s what the weatherman said.
laurance--It must be the wind that makes it so cold.I’m freezing!
soony--Me,too.Let’s go inside.
laurance--O.K,It’s no fun standing out here,even if the sun is shining.

注解：
1）get warmer=become warmer.系表结构，但口语中多用get，很少用become.
2）yeah：（口语） =yes
3）That’s what the weatherman said. what引导的是表语从句。
4）It must be...cold.这是以it引导的强调句型。与It is this book that I bought yesterday是同样的结构。must用以表示某种 “可能性”。这种结构中的that不可省略，也不可换作which.
5）It’s no fun standing out here. standing out here是真正的主语。

DIALOG 21
I AM HAPPY

 

laurance--You look happy today!
soony--I am happy.I just heard I passed my physics exam
laurance--Congratulations!I’m glad somebody’s happy.
soony--Why?What’s the matter?
laurance--Oh,I’m just worried,I guess I have to take a history exam next week.

注解：
1）I am happy：注意重音在am上，以示强调。
2）physics：物理学。
3）I’m glad somebody’s happy:somebody重读，显示说话者本人心里有些忧虑。
4）What’s the matter=What’s troubling you
5）I’m worried:此句中worried是过去分词作表语，不是被动语态。

LEARNING A LANGUAGE

laurance--I give up!I simply can’t learn French!
soony--Why do you say that?I think you’re making a lot of progress.
laurance--No,I’m not.I try and try and I still can’t speak it very well.
soony--Learning any language takes a lot of effort.But don’t give up.Why don’t we practice those dialogs together?
laurance--Good idea.That just might help.

注解：
1）give up=stop trying,不再做努力。与 keep up trying 是一对反义词组。
2）make progress：是固定搭配。意思是取得进步/进展
3）take a lot of effort:take在这里有“需要”“花费”的意思。

BORROWING A BOOK

laurance--Whose is this?
soony--It’s mine.Why do you ask?
laurance--Could I borrow it?I’ve been wanting to read it.
soony--Be my guest,but I warn you.It’s not as good as they say.
laurance--What’s the matter with it?
soony--Well,for one thing the plot is highly imporbable and for another,the characters seem more like paper dolls than people.
