I think there are mainly two possibilities. Some words of one or two syllables often skip your mind in a second, which are very hard to grasp if you haven't realized their importance in sentence meaning.

There is an unforgettable verb in my mind—VETO. I ignored it at its unfamiliar sound during my training for news items. But then my understanding of the whole sentence is totally reversed, because VETO means refuse assent to (a legislative bill) so as to prevent enactment. My advice for this is to pay attention to verbs of "BIG" meaning and "SMALL" sound.

Some words of more than two syllables are much easier to catch. But due to some sound change from original familiar root words, our ears are not used to that change. For instance, SPECI`ALITY from `special, FOR`MALITY from `formal, IDEALITIC from IDEAL. From this reason, we should train our ears by listening more to TUNE IN, or repeating to ourselves aloud.

2 .在听 VOA special news 时,在从 news 转到听 feature 时,文章变长了,在听的时候如何有效区分文章的意群,请指点。
It's very hard to store more information longer than 20 seconds in our short-term memory. Scientific study shows that we can only keep instant memory for no more than 20 second. After 20 second, if we can't use more effective way to memorize, say rote, image transfer, the instant information will be automatically replaced by later information installing.
When the news become longer, the best way to help is to take short notes. How to differentiate the sentence group according to its meaning, please see the example:
(First read the passage by yourself, then divide the sentence groups according to their meaning)
Computers are opening up a whole new world of learning. They are becoming more and more common in colleges and schools, in the office or work-place, and even in the home. Fortunately for us all they are also becoming cheaper and cheaper. Many businesses, government departments and other organizations are increasingly using the internet to communicate with other people. "electronic mail" or email as it is called is becoming increasing common. While early programs could only handle simple messages, most can now carry pictures, and even sound. Why is email so useful? One reason is its cost: it is much cheaper to email a friend than to make a long distance phone-call. In addition, an email message is delivered almost instantly--there's no seven-day wait if you're emailing someone on the other side of the globe. You can keep in touch with family and friends even when they are away--they can visit a cybercafe and check their mail from there. Many companies now rely on email--it is much cheaper, it's much faster and it's much more reliable than ordinary snail mail. So next time you have a chance to learn about sending emails make sure you do so!
