dare用作情态动词时，表示“敢于”这个意思，主要用于疑问句、否定句及条件从句。

【例如】

Dare you go home alone?

Tom dare not gosintosthe haunted house.

How dare you say such a thing to your father!

I wont allow you to swim across the river, even if you dare do it. The current is too swift.

但在现代英语中dare, need一样用作及物动词的时候更多一些，后面可以跟不定式，用于各种结构中。

I have never dared to tell him about it.

She stopped at door, not daring to enter.

If you dare to say"No", I will beat you.
